When I visited the special education classrooms on my campus, I noticed that the teachers really took advantage of having two teachers and instructional aids. The services that they were providing were using the resources they had (professional adults) and to use them in small groups so they could better meet the needs of the students. This also took a lot of time, planning, and collaboration between the two teachers. If I could change the way we provide services for our students this is what I would want to provide. It is interesting to me how similar this is to the collaborative model. In the classroom I am teaching now, I do small groups with me and an instructional aid (who is only with me 15 minutes a day). I am aiming to provide the instruction that my at risk students need. I feel that these students need special services within the classroom, but that those services are planned and specifically aimed at the needs that the student is missing or has a gap in. They also need these services in a smaller group so they can not only build confidence, but are in an environment that is safe and supports them to learn what they need. The same can be said about students who need special services. I feel that the help of another teacher and instructional aid is critical and along with this is the need for communication from all party members. The learning goals for the child need to be established and there are times that different perspectives will allow for the individuals needs to be met. The general idea seems to be that of a team and not a lone teacher inside of their classroom.
