Accountability most definitely should extend to special education. Teachers of special education classrooms should be accountable like all other teachers. Children with disabilities need to show progress just like all children that are in regular education classrooms. The progress will of course be measured in different ways. The same standardized tests that the general education students take would not be appropriate. Tests will have to be presented in an appropriate way. They will have to be age appropriate as well as developmentally appropriate, which might be a little difficult. It would be a good idea to find a way to create a test for each developmental level. Another way to show progress in special education would be to perform formal assessments. Students could be assessed at the beginning of the year and then again assessed at the end of the year. If a student has made progress throughout the year it should be very clear. Taking formal assessments you will also have hard data demonstrating a student's progress. You would also be able to look at the progress an individual student has made over all the years they have been educated in the special education classroom. I definitely do not feel that children with disabilities should have to take exit exams. This is very unrealistic in many situations because of the disabilities that children have. It is also very unfair for a child with a disability to go through at least thirteen years of schooling and not receive a diploma because they cannot take a test.
