How would I change the special education services?! Well hopefully these desires I will someday be able to fulfill as a special education teacher. I have a lot of the experiences with special education programs because I have an almost nine year old that has been in county special education programs since he was three years old. I also have worked for San Bernardino County as an educational assistant since 2002. I began as a substitute and I visited many different types of classrooms that worked with children with many different types of disabilities. Speaking from my experience there is a lot of changes that could be made. I definitely feel that it is extremely important for teachers to be trained to teach the classrooms that they are entering. For example, I don't like that there are classrooms where teachers are working with students who have autism and they know nothing about children with autism. Teachers should be trained in advance, before they are placed in the classroom. I also find that many positions are filled with random substitutes. I don't think that this is fair for the teachers or for the students. The teachers are getting paid less to be more than just a substitute. It also isn't fair to the children because as there is no permanent teacher, substitute teachers are in and out of the classroom and there is not much consistency. This obviously takes away from the children and their opportunity to learn. This is the biggest problems I have encountered and I hope to enter the classroom prepared and as another teacher to fill a position in special education.
